BEWARE: COCKROACH INFESTATION. We stayed in Quinta Splendida on 8-9 April in the suite (room 2024). Me and my girlfriend had a special occasion and we’re looking for a beautiful hotel with spa to end our long weekend trip. Arrival was OK, we had to carry our bags to ourselves to the room. Upon arrival in the suite, the window to the terrace had a crack in there. We enjoyed the complimentary prosecco but after that the experience went downhill quick. We went to the spa and upon arrival, there was a dead cockroach next to the Spa reception. This can always happen even if you try your best to minimize pest, so we didn’t bother too much and took a swim and went into the sauna. After, we went into the Turkish Steamroom and we’re horrified to find a huge cockroach of about 7 centimeters. We panicked and rushed out of the spa. The spa employees said it is Madeira and this can happen. Okay, we went back to our room and did a further inspection. It was horrible. Behind every surface we could see insect droppings/poop, on all the lights there were brown droppings and the minibar was removed from the original housing. Underneath were dead roaches so the hotel is aware of this problem. After inspecting the bathroom, we found a bunch of roaches near the stair to get into the bath. We called housekeeping and a cleaner came and sprayed anti mosquito spray. This caused the roaches to run around the bathroom and i had to smash them myself to prevent them to go everywhere. The showerhead is broken and slips down, the bathroom knob is damaged and keeps flushing, the drain doesn’t drain properly and there is plenty of fungus in the fridge and on the bottles. When speaking to the front desk, they we’re not understanding of how disgusting this experience was for us. We understand that insects are natural to a Botanical Garden but the staff is unwilling to adres this problem adequately. The hotel offered us a free lunch, which obviously we declined as we were concerned for hygiene. They couldn’t offer us anything else, even though we paid for Spa access equivalent to €90, which was a traumatic experience. After our discussion the lady proceeded to charge us the €4 city tax. This room is €350 a night and the hygiene is unacceptable. I have stayed in too many hotels in the past 10 years but never experienced such a abyssymal service. Seriously warning people to go stay somewhere else. Just visit the garden and sleep in a hygienic place for a peaceful night of sleep.
